Welcome Reception
For delegates arriving and/or registering on Sunday, we invite you to join OPHA and its Constituent Societies for refreshments and an opportunity to meet and network informally with your colleagues, meet OPHA Board Members, make new friends, and interact with sponsors and exhibitors to set the stage for an exciting conference.

OPHA Annual General Meeting
All conference delegates are invited to attend OPHA’s Annual General Meeting. This is a highlight of the conference which showcases OPHA’s advocacy role in public health. OPHA members debate and vote on resolutions which provide directions for advocacy activities for the organization. All attendees are welcome to participate in the proceedings. However, only OPHA members are allowed to vote. Members must register before the meeting to be eligible to vote. Members can register online until October 27th and on-site from 4:00 pm on Monday November 2nd.

Presidents’ Reception and 60th Anniversary Celebration
All conference attendees are invited to join Carol Timmings, OPHA President, as we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the founding of OPHA in April 1949. All Past Presidents and former members of the Board of Directors of OPHA as well as a special roster of distinguished guests have been invited to attend. Former presidents and other OPHA alumni will be asked to share their best memories of the challenges and triumphs of OPHA over the years. Watch a visual retrospective of OPHA conferences past. Share your thoughts on what OPHA means to you now, and help us celebrate our conference theme “Building for the Future”.

Pneumococcal Update in Ontario:

Dr. Dylan Pillai, MD, PhD, Clinician, Scientist, Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion, Dr. Donald Low, MD, FRCPC, Microbiologist-in-Chief, University Health Network/Mount Sinai Hospital, Medical Director, Public Health Laboratories, Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion , and Dr. Dion Neame, MB, BCh, BSc, FRCPC, FAAP, Medical Advisor, Vaccines, GlaxoSmithKline, Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Pediatrics and Family Medicine McMaster University.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand Pneumococcal disease and the epidemiology in Ontario;
  • Explain the scientific rationale for design of the Synflorix™ vaccine;
  • Discuss the clinical data.

The Annual OPHA Awards Luncheon recognizes outstanding achievements in public health and provides an opportunity to showcase our commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and professional excellence. Highlights of this gala event include presentation of:

The OPHA Honorary Membership Award
This award confers honorary OPHA membership on an individual who has made outstanding contributions to public health in Ontario.

OPHA Life Membership Award
This award recognizes the outstanding contributions of an individual OPHA member to the development of the organization.

Dr. Sheela BasrurThe Dr. Sheela Basrur Scholarship, an annual monetary award available to current staff in public health who are returning to a post secondary institution for further education, or students planning to enter the public health workforce and currently enrolled in a public health focused field of study at the undergraduate or graduate level.

PHRED Student Award
This award presented by the Public Health Research Education and Development program (PHRED), one of OPHA’s Constituent Societies, recognizes the work of an undergraduate or graduate student in applied public health research and evaluation.

60th Anniversary Essay Contest for Students Grand Prize Presentation
OPHA will present a monetary award to a student from a health-related discipline whose essay, film or video entry into the 60th Anniversary Essay Contest for Students was judged most worthy by a special OPHA panel of judges.

A second monetary award has been sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline Canada. For more information please contact the OPHA Communications Officer or refer to the conference website.

This year's conference was co-hosted by OPHA's 11 Constituent Societies. They made a "Memorable Moments" presentation at the luncheon [PDF, 2.3MB].

ANDSOOHA Annual General Meeting
ANDSOOHA’s mission is to promote excellence in public health nursing administration and practice and provide a united voice for public health nursing managers in Ontario. Members are public health nurses (PHN) employed at the management level, in every region of the province. All conference delegates are welcome to attend, though only members are allowed to vote. Registration will be on-line until October 27th, and on-site from 4:00 pm on Tuesday November 3rd.

2009 Charles Hastings Lecture in Public Health
OPHA is pleased to collaborate with Toronto Public Health in inviting conference participants to attend the Charles Hastings Lecture in Public Health. This annual event was inaugurated as part of the 2008 celebration of 125 Years of Public Health in Toronto and is intended to honour the legacy of Dr. Hastings, Toronto’s MoH from 1910 to 1929, a visionary leader who transformed the practice of public health in Canada’s largest urban setting. The lecture will be open to the public. More details will be announced by Toronto Public Health as they are confirmed.
